Voter Registration System Taken Offline in Coffee County Cyber-Incident
-
Coffee County in the US State of Georgia experienced a cyber incident that reportedly severed its connection to the state’s voter registration system. The County was alerted to unusual cyber activity on its IT infrastructure by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on April 15, 2024. Promptly, the local authority declared a cyber incident, leading to a comprehensive examination of the County’s IT environment in collaboration with DHS and CISA. Investigation revealed cyber activity by "an unknown malicious actor(s)," although there's no evidence of data/files exfiltration.
Coffee County is cooperating with federal authorities to determine the incident's cause and the identities of those responsible. While Coffee County severed its network connection to GARViS, a voter registration software system, as a precaution, there's no indication it was infiltrated. This incident follows a history of cyber-related issues, notably during the 2020 US Presidential Election.
CNN reported that the incident is likely a ransomware attack. This comes shortly after Jackson County in Missouri declared a state of emergency due to a ransomware attack on its IT systems, impacting various services. Election officials have been cautioned to prepare for cyber threats and influence campaigns leading up to upcoming elections.
